Skydives are typically taken from between 10,000ft and 12,000ft, it is rare for jumps to commence above 14,000ft. The body is not equipped to operate above 10,000ft for long periods of time as there are variations in atmospheric pressure and less oxygen is available at higher altitude.
Most tandem masters have completed literally thousands of jumps and know the process inside and out. While initially it can be quite nerve racking considering the fact of jumping from a perfectly good airplane. Many people find once they get to the drop zone and see people landing one after another almost continuously throughout the day they begin to relax a little more.
Skydivers are also equipped with reserve shoots so even in the extremely unlikely event of a canopy not deploying a reserve shoot can be pulled for a safe and controlled landing.
